A small detail, but not a small story.
This paper chanukiah is one of many hidden Judaic amulets that will be embedded within Stolen, the memorial artwork I am creating for the Queensland Holocaust Museum.
Every element in this piece is being considered — not just for how it looks, but for what it carries. The symbolism is intentional. Careful. Personal. Each detail is created slowly, thoughtfully, and with a great deal of love.
There are moments in this process where the gravity of what I am making catches up with me.
And I cry.
Like so much of this work, this chanukiah won’t shout for attention. It will wait to be discovered.
It holds just one light, alongside the shamash — marking the first night of Chanukah, the night everything changed.
A quiet symbol.
Of light.
Of memory.
Of what was taken.
Making fringed flowers is one of the most laborious and painstaking parts of my work. Until now, I’ve either outsourced it (at significant cost) or sat there cutting every single strip by hand with a tiny guillotine. For this piece alone, I’ll need thousands.
My printer suggested having a forme made to cut them for me and honestly, it’s been a game changer. I still have to roll each element into the final flower, but it’s definitely removed one of my least favourite chores from the process.

I’m in the early stages of working on a new piece called ‘The Light We Reflect’
Like many of my works, it didn’t begin with a design. It began with a feeling.
In times that feel heavy and uncertain, I’ve found myself thinking about light and how we reflect our own light into the world.
The kind of light that doesn’t disappear in darkness.
This is the beginning, but I’m looking forward to sharing the process with you.
