🌱 WHAT TO PLANT IN PERTH: DJERAN 🥕

April marks the beginning of the season of Djeran. The Noongar Season ‘Djeran' is represented by the colour green as it is the time of the year when the cooler weather begins. Djeran season sees a break in the really hot weather with the change of season clearly defined by cool nights that bring a dewy presence in the early mornings.

The winds will also change, especially in their intensity, with light breezes generally swinging from southerly directions. Many flying ants can be seen cruising around in the light winds.

Djeran is a time of red flowers, especially from the red flowering gum (Corymbiaficifolia), as well as the smaller and more petite flowers of the summer flame (Beaufortia aestiva). Banksias also start to display their flowers, ensuring that there are nectar food sources for the many small mammals and birds that rely upon them.

Djeran is a busy time in the garden, when an array of delicious winter veggies can be planted as seed or seedlings.

Loving art and loving science leads to some interesting rabbit holes. Here is one I’ve fallen down today: the science of colourblindness. I’ve spent many hours reading about the differences between mixing colours of paint and mixing colours of light, and had loads of fun with my STEAM club kids doing experiments. I’ve also spent a bunch of time researching the phenomena of structural colour - which is where colour isn’t generated when light bounces off the pigments on an objects’ surface, but by tiny 3 dimensional geometric structures that move, bend, and split light. Butterfly wings are an example of a surface that reflects colour because of their structure rather than pigments.

One day I’m going to make a book about colour - the physics of light, the differences in humans perceive colour, how animals perceive colour, and the many amazing examples of colour in the natural world.
