It’s officially that time of year when Brisbane pulls out its collective puffer jackets. But if you’ve ever stepped out into a crisp winter morning and felt your jaw immediately start vibrating, you might wonder what’s actually going on.
Why do your teeth chatter when you're cold?
🥶 Teeth chattering is a completely involuntary reflex. When your core temperature drops, your brain sends a panic signal to your muscles, telling them to rapidly contract and relax to generate body heat. Because your jaw muscles are incredibly strong and sit right near your ears, you feel (and hear) this rapid movement the most!
🥶 While it’s a clever survival trick, constant chattering and winter shivering can lead to some serious jaw clenching. If you find your face or jaw joint aching by the end of a chilly day, it’s likely muscle fatigue from holding all that tension
🥶 Combine that jaw tension with a sharp intake of freezing morning air, and winter can be surprisingly rough on your smile - especially if you have worn enamel or receding gums

Getting kids to care about brushing their teeth can sometimes feel like negotiating a complex peace treaty. If you are tired of the morning and bedtime bathroom battles, try introducing the "2-2-2 Rule."
It’s incredibly easy for little ones to remember and covers all the essential bases for a healthy, strong smile!
Here is the breakdown:
✌️ 2 Times a Day: Brush once in the morning, and once right before bed. (That nighttime brush is the absolute most important one, as it stops 'sugar bugs' from feasting while they sleep!).
✌️ 2 Minutes Each Time: A quick 30-second scrub just doesn't cut it. To make the two minutes fly by, set a fun sand timer, play their favorite song, or invest in an electric brush with a built-in buzzer.
✌️ 2 Times a Year: Bring them in to see us every six months! Regular routine check-ups mean we can catch any tiny issues before they turn into painful problems.
With the winter school holidays creeping up fast at the end of the month, it's the perfect time to tick off one of those two annual visits without having to pull them out of class.
Give us a call to secure a holiday check-up spot for the little ones!

😴 DID YOU KNOW... your saliva production almost completely shuts down when you sleep?
💤 During the day, your saliva is constantly washing away food particles and neutralising cavity-causing acids. But at night, your mouth goes into a "dry mode."
💤 This is exactly why skipping your nighttime brush is so dangerous! If you leave sugary or starchy food debris on your teeth when you go to bed, the bacteria have 8 uninterrupted hours to feast and produce acid in a dry environment.
This is also why "morning breath" happens! Brushing before bed is the absolute most important time to clean your teeth.
