Strathfield’ Tree of the Month: Turpentine Trees 💚

Turpentine trees are indigenous to the Strathfield area and many fine specimens existing throughout the LGA including in Strathfield Park and at Todman Reserve at the corner of Barker Road and Oxford Road. There are also many old remnant specimens in private gardens.

Turpentine trees are of particularly high value for their timber which is resistant to termites and to marine borers. Consequently, they are often the timber that is used for piles on jetties and wharfs. Apart from their practical uses, they are a beautiful tree with grey-green foliage that is white underneath, thick, spongy, stringy bark and fused seed capsule fruit that look a little like UFOs. In Strathfield they get to be a medium to large tree but in forest environments such as the south coast of NSW, they can grow to become forest giants.
