When we talk about great architecture, it's easy to assume it comes down to budget.
Alexander Josephson () offers a different perspective.
He reminds us that proportion and materiality are fundamental design decisions, and many of them don't necessarily increase cost. What they do change is how a building performs, how it ages and how people experience it.
That's a conversation worth having.

We often celebrate success.
We rarely talk about the losses that make success possible.
Alexander Josephson () shared a simple lesson from his early career: after losing a competition, his mentor told him, "You're only allowed to be upset for two days."
Whether it was two days or a little longer, the message was clear. You acknowledge the disappointment, learn from it, and keep creating.
That's a lesson that reaches well beyond architecture.

One idea from my conversation with Alexander Josephson () has stayed with me.
"Architecture is a political act."
Not because every project is political in the traditional sense, although because every project requires people to believe in it. Whether it's securing approvals, challenging conventions, or bringing others together around a shared vision, great architecture is never created in isolation.
It's a thoughtful reminder that designing buildings is ultimately about navigating people, ideas and responsibility.
