The Fitness Industry is about to get a massive shake up...
Who's to blame...?
1. The gym
2. The trainer
3. The person
The old ways of doing things are soon to end following this incident.
Here's my 2 cents.
1. The gym is responsible. Here's why. If you ask someone to wear your business branding, regardless of what your contract says, they're representing your business. Therefore you are responsible for what they do while wearing your branding. Traditionally this is called "employment", in the fitness industry this is called "I'm a sub-contractor at a commercial gym".
2. The trainer is responsible. Here's why.
Your number 1 purpose for being a personal trainer is to help people become healthier. Not flog the s**t out of them (for some reason this seems to be the general public's view of exercise, i'll talk about this next).
Duty of care plays a large part in the responsibility of the trainer in any scenario. First and foremost if someone is in pain, exercise is no longer beneficial.
3. The person is responsible. Here's why.
Societies view of exercise for health has become somewhat twisted with social media, athletes pushing their bodies to the limits of human potential, then the 'gen pop' thinking that's cool and wanting to do the same and thinking it's necessary to achieve the best results. This thinking places pressure on the trainer to deliver a kick arse workout that the client will remember for days and tell all their friends about when they ask why they can't walk properly. Unfortunately this is what "fitness" has come to.
AND if you're in pain or something doesn't feel right, take responsibility and learn to say NO. Don't expect your to happen overnight or from 1 workout.
Every-one and no-one is to blame. Some big lessons learned for all parties involved, regardless of outcome.
