NAIDOC Week (5–12 July) is an opportunity for all Australians to come together and explore the rich cultures, histories, and ongoing contributions of First Nations peoples. It’s a time to celebrate the achievements of the world’s oldest continuous living cultures, while standing united with communities in recognition and respect.
Junction is excited to be part of Wangaratta’s NAIDOC Week community gathering at Batchelors Green on 9 July.

We are so excited to announce that Ngalnya Atkinson of Ngalnya Art ( ) has been selected as the artist behind Junction's very first Reconciliation Action Plan artwork!

We want to start by acknowledging every artist who put in an expression of interest for this commission. The applications we received were moving, and we are grateful to everyone who took the time to share their work, their stories and a piece of themselves with us. It was a hard decision, and we do not take that lightly.

In saying that, we are so excited to be working with Ngalnya - whose work has graced exhibition walls, corporate spaces and football fields alike, always rooted in the stories, knowledge and Country that shaped her.

Ngalnya is a proud Yorta Yorta woman with family connections across all of Victoria including Taungurung, raised in Shepparton and now calling Naarm home. Her journey as an artist began as a young girl on the riverbanks with her aunties and elders, learning to find ochre and paint to tell the stories of her people, and those memories live in every piece she creates.

For our RAP, Ngalnya plans to draw on the waterways and native flora of our regions to tell a story of connection, growth and opportunity. The Murray River, the meeting of rivers around Wodonga, the rivers running through Shepparton, native red gums and wattles, and the idea of walking alongside one another with shared purpose. It is a vision that speaks to what reconciliation really means to us, as a commitment to how we show up every day.

Throughout the process, Ngalnya will work closely with her elders, family and community to ensure the work is created with the cultural care it deserves, and we could not be more excited to see it come to life.
