World Engineering Day, proclaimed by UNESCO, reminds us that the global energy transition is ultimately an engineering challenge. Behind every climate target, renewable project, grid upgrade or industrial decarbonisation effort stand engineers who design, test and implement the systems that make these ambitions possible.

This reality was clearly reflected during SECW - Sarajevo Energy and Climate Week 2025, where discussions repeatedly returned to practical questions of implementation: how to modernise electricity grids, integrate renewables at scale, strengthen infrastructure resilience, and translate energy transition strategies into real projects and investments. These are areas where engineering expertise is indispensable.

Across panels and technical sessions, engineers from utilities, industry, research institutions and international organisations contributed to conversations on topics such as renewable integration, grid stability, hydrogen development, circular economy solutions and industrial energy efficiency. Their work is at the core of turning climate policy into functioning infrastructure.

As we look a head to ๐’๐„๐‚๐– ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ”, we remain committed to keeping engineers and technical experts at the centre of the dialogue-ensuring that the regionโ€™s energy transition is grounded not only in policy ambition, but also in the knowledge, systems thinking and practical solutions that engineering provides.

On this day, we extend our congratulations to engineers everywhere and thank them for their continued contribution to building a more resilient and sustainable future.

A credible and implementation-focused energy dialogue is not possible without the active involvement of key sector actors. In that context, Elektroprivreda BiH was one of the most important strategic partners of SECW 2025, contributing both expertise and institutional perspective to the programme.

Recently, we had the honour of presenting a certificate of appreciation to ๐’๐š๐ง๐ž๐ฅ ๐๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐›๐š๐ฌฬŒ๐ข๐œฬ, ๐†๐ž๐ง๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ฅ ๐Œ๐š๐ง๐š๐ ๐ž๐ซ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐„๐ฅ๐ž๐ค๐ญ๐ซ๐จ๐ฉ๐ซ๐ข๐ฏ๐ซ๐ž๐๐š ๐๐ข๐‡, as a sign of gratitude for the companyโ€™s engagement and partnership.

Representatives of EP BiH actively participated in discussions addressing the future of the power sector, electricity market development, infrastructure resilience, and transition planning in coal-dependent regions. The dialogue throughout SECW clearly underscored the central role of public utilities in balancing regulatory alignment, system stability, investment planning, and long-term decarbonisation objectives.

Strategic cooperation with Elektroprivreda BiH reflects the shared understanding that the energy transition in Bosnia and Herzegovina must be grounded in operational realities, institutional capacity, and responsible planning.

We sincerely value this partnership and look forward to continued collaboration in strengthening a resilient and sustainable energy system.

This panel of experts and decision-makers will confront one of the most current and challenging issues in the European energy space: the direct impact of the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) on electricity trading with Energy Community countries.

Starting January 1, 2026, the definitive phase of CBAM begins, imposing an obligation on importers of electricity into the EU to declare embedded emissions and purchase corresponding certificates. This de facto introduces a tax on the carbon footprint of imports, aiming to protect the internal market and combat carbon leakage. However, this change carries profound consequences for the regional electricity market.

โ—พ What are the strategies for Energy Community countries โ€“ accelerated implementation of their own emissions trading systems, direct coupling with the EU ETS, or another model?
โ—พ How will this affect to electricity trading between EnZ members?

โ—พ Could there be unintended effects on the stability of the power system due to distortions in trade flows?

The panel's goal is to deepen the understanding of this complex mechanism, exchange experiences and perspectives of all actors in the value chain, and identify possible paths forward that will enable a sustainable, secure, and fair energy transition for the entire region.
