Velika Kladuša (Large Kladusha) is a compact town located in the corner of the Bosanska Krajina Region in Bosnia and Herzegovina, while the Grabarska River flows south of town and below the Kladuša Castle.
The Town was Mentioned in October 30, 1280 by the name Cladosa, but was said during the Byzantine Empire it was assumed it started to grow slowly until the 13th century, when in 1464 it was controlled by two different Hungarian kings.
After the Ottoman Pariod and Austro-Hungarian occupation in 1878, Velika Kladuša (like many other towns and fortresses) put up one of the largest and hard fought battles of the War, as the Town was heavily supplied and ready!
Nevertheless, it fell under their rule and started rapidly developing infrastructure with the Town Mosque and the Church of St. Nicholas, schools and other important structures.
During WWII the Town of V. Kladuša fought on the Side of the Yugoslav Partizans and even at one point turned to the N**i's side, but was a surprise attack against the German Facists, who were attacked from all sides.
In Socialist Yugoslavia, a new company arised, called Agrokomerc, with headquarters in V. Kladuša. It was one of Yugoslavia's most largest and most popular food companies during the Cold War and with about 13.000 workers turned Velika Kladuša from one of the poorest regions into one of the richest in Socialist Yugoslavia at the time!
The Bosnian War was announced but V. Kladuša did not want war, just like many other cities and villages around the Bos Krajina Region and formed the Autonomous Provence of Western Bosnia (APZB), with Kladuša Fortress as the Capital. You can visit Young Square, Town Mosque, Kladuša Fortress and Old Town, Town Park and St. Nicolas Church. The town is not very close to other towns, since the roads are very narrow and small.
Recommended to visit if visiting Bosanska Krajina or Slunj/Karlovac
