The micro-battery is about the size of a grain of sand — one square millimeter across — and has an energy density of 100 microwatt hours per square centimeter. Professor Oliver Schmidt, who led the study, believes that density will increase with time: "There is still a large optimization potential for this technology, and we may expect significantly stronger micro-batteries in the future."

In a paper published in the journal Advanced Energy Materials, the researchers detail how they layered current collectors and electrode strips made of polymeric, metallic, and dielectric materials onto a tensioned water surface.

Despite its evident limitations, the team behind the new gadget believes it might potentially be employed in small chips for biosensors in the human body.

McGill University scientists create a biomaterial robust enough to heal the heart, muscles, and voice cords by combining the understanding of chemistry, physics, biology, and engineering, indicating a significant leap in regenerative medicine.

“People recovering from heart damage often face a long and tricky journey. Healing is challenging because of the constant movement tissues must withstand as the heartbeats. The same is true for vocal cords. Until now there was no injectable material strong enough for the job,” says Guangyu Bao, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at McGill University.

The team, led by Professor Luc Mongeau and Assistant Professor Jianyu Li, developed a new injectable hydrogel for wound repair. Hydrogel is a type of biomaterial that provides room for cells to live and grow. Once injected into the body, the biomaterial forms a stable, porous structure allowing live cells to grow or pass through to repair the injured organs.

“The results are promising, and we hope that one day the new hydrogel will be used as an implant to restore the voice of people with damaged vocal cords, for example, laryngeal cancer survivors,” says Guangyu Bao.

According to the experts, the breakthrough also offers up new possibilities for other uses such as medication delivery, tissue engineering, and the production of model tissues for drug screening. The team is also considering using hydrogel technology to build lungs for testing COVID-19 medicines.
