🔍 Cooling Smarter : Chiller Outperforms The Best in Energy & Cost for Tall Buildings
💡 Why it matters:
Air conditioning can account for over 50% of a building’s energy use—making energy efficiency a top priority for engineers, developers, and building owners alike.
We saw a research of Indonesia, conducted a comparative analysis of chiller air-cooled systems and Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) / others technologies for a 15-story office building to determine the most cost-effective and energy-efficient solution for high-rise air conditioning.
📊 Key Findings:
🔌 Electricity Consumption
Chiller system consumed 57,361.3 kWh, while the VRF system / others consumed 61,600.0 kWh over 6 months.
The chiller system proved 7.4% more energy-efficient than the VRF / others
💰 Cost-Effectiveness
Overall, the chiller system was 35% more cost-effective annually than the VRF system / others

Chiller system: IDR 3,131,748,160
VRF system / others: IDR 2,950,889,439
🕒 System Lifespan
Chiller: Up to 25 years
VRF / others: Approximately 15 years

While the chiller system /others had a slightly lower upfront cost, the chiller system provided significantly better long-term value in terms of energy savings, operating costs, and durability.

As this was a simulation-based study, we recommend further empirical research across building types like hospitals, factories, schools, and airports to confirm broader applicability.
