On February 21, 1952, several students in Dhaka (then part of East Pakistan) were killed by police during protests demanding the recognition of Bangla (Bengali) as one of the state languages of Pakistan. The government had imposed Urdu as the sole national language, ignoring the majority Bengali-speaking population in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh).

The students who sacrificed their lives—Salam, Rafiq, Barkat, Jabbar, and others—are remembered as language martyrs. Their bravery eventually led to Bangla being recognized as a state language.
