আমার বিএসসি জার্নি শুরু হয় ২০১৪ সালের মার্চ মাসে, ক্লাস শুরু হওয়ার সাথে সাথে মনে হয় এই ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং হয়ত আমার জন্য না! সারাজীবন প্রাইভেট কোচিং করে আসার পর হঠাত করে ইংরেজিতে নিজে নিজে পড়ালেখা করা যেন অসম্ভব হয়ে দাড়ায়, অনেক চেষ্টার পর নিজেকে আর আটকে রাখতে পারলাম না, শুরু হলো ব্যাকলগ আর ব্যাকলগ! এক সময় ইয়ার ড্রপ! ব্যাকলগের বোঝা বাড়তে বাড়তে দাড়ালো ১৫ টায়, যদিও শেষের দিকে ব্যাকলগ খাওয়া বন্ধ করি বন্ধু বান্ধব আর জুনিয়র সিনিয়রদের সহোযোগিতায়! ৪ বছরের কোর্স ৬ বছর লেগে যায় আমার! সময়টা ২০২০ সালের ৩ মার্চ, রেজাল্টের দিন আল্লাহর কাছে দোয়া করতেছিলাম যেন পাশ হয়ে যায়! পাশ ঠিকি করলাম কিন্তু রেজাল্ট হলো ২.৭৯!

মনের মধ্যে তখনো ইচ্ছা ছিলো যে বিদেশ যাব, পড়ালেখা করবো! যেই আমি বিএসসি পাশ করতেই পারি না সেই আমি আবার উচ্চতর শিক্ষার জন্য লাফাচ্ছি! ঠিক ওই সময় ও আমার ধারনা নাই যে আমাকে একটা ইউনিভার্সিটি কি জন্য নিবে অথবা আমার কোথায় পড়তে যাওয়া উচিত! এক সময় পর বুঝতে পারলাম জিয়ারি হতে পারে আমার ভাগ্য পাল্টানোর চাবিকাঠি! যেই ভাবা সেই কাজ! ৬ জন মিলে ম্যাগুস একাউন্ট কিনলাম। পড়ার ১ সপ্তাহের মধ্যে বুঝতে পারলাম যে এই ভার্বাল আসলে ইংলিশ না, এইটা সাহিত্য চর্চার চেয়ে কোনো অংশে কম না। করোনার ইফেক্টে সব এক্সাম বন্ধ তখন, এই জিয়ারি এক্সাম দিতে লেগেছিলো আমার ১ বছর। ২০২১ সালের জুলাই মাস, টানা ২ বার ডেট চেঞ্জ করে জিয়ারি এক্সাম দিতে গেলাম। রেজাল্ট অবিশ্বাস্য

সব মিলায়ে টেনে টুনে ৩০০ ও না, কেন জানি মাইনা নিলাম পড়ালেখা আর হবে না! হঠাৎ করে একটা স্বনামধন্য ওষুধ কোম্পানিতে চাকরী পেয়ে গেলাম, আমার বাবা-মা এর পরামর্শে আমি চাকরী শুরু করলাম, একটা সময় পর পড়ালেখার ভূত মাথা থেকে নেমেই গেলো। মাঝে মাঝে আমেরিকায় বন্ধু, ছোট ভাই আর বড় ভাই এর সাথে কথা বলতাম, আমেরিকার গল্প শুনতাম, অনেক সময় তারাও হয়ত ভাবত আমি আদার ব্যাপারী হয়ে জাহাজের খবর নিচ্ছি কেনো?

তিন বছর পার হওয়ার পর সরকারি চাকরীর জন্য ও পড়ালেখা ধরলাম, ২ মাস পড়ার পর হঠাৎ করে বাবা মারা গেলো! সময়টা ২০২৩ সাল! সবসময় অর্থনৈতিক সচ্ছল পরিবারে থাকার পর ও নিজের মধ্যে একটা ভয় কাজ করতে থাকে যে জীবনের সবচেয়ে বড় সাপোর্ট বাবা আর নেই। প্রাইভেট চাকরি করে নিজের ভবিষ্যৎ কল্পনা করতে ভয় হচ্ছিল!

আবার সেই পুরানো ভূত মাথা চাড়া দিয়ে উঠলো কিন্তু এইবার আরো শক্তিশালী মোটিবেশন নিয়ে। মনে হল আমার যেই প্রোফাইল তাতে আরকি আমার ফান্ড ম্যানেজ হবে না! সিদ্ধান্ত নিলাম দেশেই মাস্টার্স করবো! চাকরীর পাশাপাশি মাস্টার্স করা সহজ কথা নয়। অনেক খোজ খবর নিয়ে জাহাঙ্গীরনগর ইউনিভার্সিটির এপ্লাইড ফিজিক্স এন্ড ইলেক্ট্রনিকস এ ভর্তি হয়ে গেলাম, প্রতি শুক্রবার ক্লাস।

প্রথম দিন থেকেই টার্গেট সিজিপিএ। যেই কাজ গুলা রুয়েটে করি নাই সেই কাজ করা শুরু করলাম, রেগুলার লেকচার তুলা আর সিটি, এসাইনমেন্ট এবং মিড ঠিক মত দিয়া।

সকাল ৬- সন্ধ্যা ৭ টা অফিস করে বাসায় এসে আবার পড়ালেখা, অসম্ভব প্যারার মধ্যে থেকে নিজের প্রগেস দেখে শান্তি হচ্ছিলো! জাহাঙ্গীরনগর পড়ার সময় এক শ্রদ্ধেয় স্যারের সাথে শুরু হলো রিসার্চ এর কাজ, এমন ও দিন আছে সারাদিন অফিস করে রাত ২ টা পর্যন্ত ল্যাবে ছিলাম।

অন্তিম ফলাফল ৩.৮৪, রিসার্চ এর কাজ ও চলনসই। এটলিস্ট আমি আমার রিসার্চ এর ফিল্ড চুজ করতে পারছি।

৬ সেপ্টেবর, ২০২৫ IELTS দিলাম, কিন্তু বিধিবাম। পুরা বাংলাদেশের ওইদিনের রেজাল্ট আইডিপি আর বিসি আটকায়ে দিলো, ভেবেছিলাম ৭ পাবো, দেড় মাস পর রেজাল্ট পেলাম ৬.৫ (NBLT 6)। মরতে মরতে বেচে ফিরলাম। মোটামুটি সব ইউনিভার্সিটিতেই চলবে এই রেজাল্ট।

২০২৫ সালের সেপ্টেম্বর মাস থেকেই মেইল করা শুরু করলাম, প্রেফার্ড রিসার্চ ফিল্ড ম্যাটেরিয়াল সিনথেসিস এবং কারেক্টারাইজেশন, অসংখ্য প্রফেসর পেলাম যারা এই রকম কাজ করে, আমার সাথে রিসার্চ ইন্টারেস্ট মিলে এমন অনেক প্রফেসরের সাথেই কাজের ইচ্ছা প্রশন করলাম, অনেকে ইন্টারভিউ নিলো কেউ আবেদন করতে বলল।

তখন ও কিন্তু আমার লো সিজিপিএ এর অভিশাপ যায় নাই, অনেক প্রফেসর এবং বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় আমার রেজাল্ট এর জন্য আমাকে আবেদন করতেও মানা করেছে, খুজতে শুরু করলাম এমন বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় যারা আমার রিসেন্ট রেজাল্টকে বিবেচনা করবে। লিস্ট বানানো শুরু করলাম, অনেক ওয়েবসাইট ঘাটলাম কোথায় আমি এপ্লাই করতে পারব, ফান্ডিং ত দূরের কথা!

অক্টোবর মাসের পর প্রফেসরদের থেকেও রিপ্লাই পাওয়া বন্ধ হয়ে যায়, নভেম্বরে পৌছে মনে হচ্ছিল যে সব জায়গার ফান্ডিং হয়ত শেষ কিন্তু আমার তখনো ফান্ডিং কনফার্ম না!

ডিসেম্বর ২০২৫, আল্লাহর নাম নিয়ে আমি সেন্ট্রাল এপ্লাই শুরু করলাম, টানা ১৭ টা ইউনিতে এপ্লাই করলাম, কোনোটায় টাকা দিয়ে আবার কোনোটায় ফ্রি। সহসা আবিষ্কার করলাম, এপ্লিকেশন ফি ওভেয়ড ইউনিগুলাতে নিজের অবস্থান করতে চাইলে নিজের প্রোফাইল শক্তিশালী হতে হবে। আসতে আসতে এপ্লিকেশন করাও শেষ এবার অপেক্ষার পালা হোক সে এডমিশন অথবা রিজেকশন।

২০২৬ সালের ফেব্রুয়ারী মাস রোজার প্রথম দিন, আমি এডমিশন পাই Phd in Mechanical Engineering, Southern Illinois University Carbondale. অবশেষে একটা জয়। ফান্ডিং এর ডিশিসন আসা থেকে শুরু করে I-20 পর্যন্ত সময় শেষ হয় ইদের দিন।

The Visa Officer was a young American lady at Counter 8. The interview was super smooth, and she was very positive from the beginning.

💬 Conversation

Me: Hello, good morning, officer.
VO: Good morning. Please pass me your I-20 and passport.
Me: Here they are.
VO: Oh! You are going to Southern Illinois University Carbondale? (It seemed like she had a very good vibe about this university.)
Me: Yes.
VO: Tell me about your research.
Me: My research topic is about developing high-performance lightweight materials for aerospace and biomedical devices.

(My interview ended here. She moved to my wife and started asking her.)

VO: How did you meet?
Wife: We met on Facebook.
VO: Who DMed first?
Wife: He did. (Indicating me)
VO: Why did you reply to him? (At this moment, she was being mischievous with my wife.)
Wife: He seemed interesting.

VO: Give me your I-20.
(We gave it.)

VO: Oh, you got married in 2022. Do you have kids?
Both: No.

VO (to my wife): Why do you want to go with him?
Wife: I will stay with him and give him mental support.
VO (with a smile): He needs support?

VO: After social media verification, the visa will be issued. It generally takes a couple of days.

The VO kept our passports and gave us a 221(g).

💡 Pro Tips for Low CGPA Holders

If you have a low CGPA in your bachelor’s, consider doing a master’s from Bangladesh. It really helps to create a positive impression with professors and to get involved in research work by any means possible.

Universities like JU, DU, NSU, BRACU, and AIUB provide good master’s education in the engineering field.

📧 Tips for Professor Selection

I do not support sending a general email to everyone or highly specialized messages to individual professors. Since we do not know which professor has funding, it can be a waste of time to study each professor’s research paper and write detailed reviews especially if you do not have strong research achievements.

Imagine reviewing a US professor’s paper what would they think? 🤣

I suggest emailing every professor in your research field. At least your email will reach every door, and you never know where you might get funding. I do not believe that a detailed email body guarantees a response or funding. Professors who are hiring usually check all emails. You can use tools like ChatGPT to draft your emails and save time.

🎤 Tips for Visa Interview

Be super confident and well-dressed. Stay positive, do not be afraid, and speak fluently and clearly. You should present yourself confidently in that situation.

Take preparation help from ChatGPT if needed.

⚠️ Critical Situations I Prepared For Interview

1. My mother was an F4 visa applicant (DQ done, waiting for interview), and I was also part of that petition. However, due to being over 21, I aged out. I mentioned this in my DS-160.

2. I had a $5304 funding deficit for my spouse.

3. I had traveled to China for official purposes.

I prepared answers for all these scenarios. Many people said I might face difficulties because of these, but the VO did not ask anything about them.

🌟 Final Thoughts

From my experience, everything in a visa interview depends on the Visa Officer. I also feel that for fully funded students, the process tends to be smoother.

When someone gets rejected, people try to find reasons in the applicant’s profile. If my application had been rejected, I am sure people would have pointed to these same factors as reasons for denial. Throughout the entire process from professor selection to visa issuance ChatGPT was a great help.
