In the late 19th century, during the Victorian era, long hair for women was not only a symbol of beauty but also a powerful representation of morality, femininity, and social status. Women were encouraged to grow their hair to the waist, knees, or even the floor. This long hair indicated that a woman was clean, patient, and disciplined, as it required considerable time to brush, wash with special tonics, and carefully tie up.

Hair was typically worn tied up in public, symbolizing modesty and decorum. Hair would only be left loose in private settings, such as before sleep or during intimate moments with a husband. Wealthy women could showcase their long hair as a sign that they had the time and household help to maintain it, which was not available to lower-class women. Poor women often resorted to cutting and selling their hair, as there was high demand for wigs made from real hair at the time.
