Press conference of Awami League and Bengali community leaders in the United States
November 20, SAIP USA Representative:

International human rights organizations, including the United Nations, Human Rights Watch, have expressed concern over the trial and death penalty verdict in the absence of Bangladesh's former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal in the case of crimes against humanity.

They expressed their concern about human rights in separate statements.

Both men were tried in absentia and were not given access to lawyers of their choice, raising serious human rights concerns, Human Rights Watch said in a statement.

The United Nations Human Rights Office, on the other hand, has opposed the death penalty verdict, as the United Nations has been calling for the abolition of such sentences for a long time.

At the same time, they emphasized on the establishment of justice in Bangladesh.

However, the UN Human Rights Office described the verdict as a 'moment for victims'.

Additionally, Amnesty International responded that the 'unprecedented speed' of the trial in absentia and the verdict raised 'significant concerns' for the justice of the case.

Following this, the Awami League and Bengali community leaders living in the United States held a press conference criticizing this verdict and protesting.
