The Material Advantage BUET Chapter successfully hosted an engaging and insightful seminar titled “From Lab to Launchpad: Opportunities for Materials Science Graduates at Tesla and in Silicon Valley’s Tech Ecosystem.”
We were honored to welcome Dr. Rubayyat Mahbub Turjo, PhD (Carnegie Mellon University), former Postdoctoral Associate at MIT, and currently Staff Reliability Data Scientist at Tesla. Drawing from his remarkable journey—from BUET to leading global institutions and the heart of Silicon Valley—Dr. Turjo shared practical insights on transforming fundamental materials research into real-world engineering solutions.
The session explored how advanced characterization techniques, data science, machine learning, and AI are reshaping modern materials engineering, particularly in energy materials, batteries, and reliability engineering. Students gained valuable perspectives on interdisciplinary career pathways, industry expectations, and the skills required to thrive in globally competitive tech environments.
The seminar concluded with an interactive Q&A session, where participants engaged in thoughtful discussions on higher studies, industry transitions, and career planning. The enthusiastic participation and overwhelming response truly reflected the strong interest among students in bridging academia with industry.
We extend our sincere gratitude to Dr. Rubayyat Mahbub Turjo for sharing his experiences and inspiring the next generation of materials engineers.

🎓 From Lab to Launchpad: Opportunities for Materials Science Graduates at Tesla and in Silicon Valley’s Tech Ecosystem
The Material Advantage BUET Chapter, in collaboration with the Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, BUET, is pleased to host an alumni seminar featuring Dr. Rubayyat Mahbub Turjo.
Dr. Turjo earned his PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, where his research focused on quantitative analysis of 3D fuel cell electrode microstructures using PFIB-SEM to enhance durability and reliability. He later served as a Postdoctoral Associate at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE), MIT, applying Natural Language Processing and Deep Learning techniques to identify feasible processing routes for solid electrolytes and electrodes aimed at high-performance, durable battery systems.
He completed both his BSc and MSc in Materials and Metallurgical Engineering from BUET and is currently working as a Staff Reliability Data Scientist at Tesla, where he leads data-driven initiatives and develops machine and deep learning–based predictive models for health monitoring and reliability assessment of engineering components.
This seminar will offer valuable insights into translating advanced materials research into real-world industrial applications, career opportunities for materials science graduates in global tech industries, and the growing role of data science and AI in modern engineering.
