Etna, el volcán que volvió a entrar en erupción en Italia. 2 de junio de 2025

La erupción, registrada por el INGV, provocó el colapso parcial del cráter sureste del volcán. Esto generó la salida de flujos piroclásticos —una mezcla de gases muy calientes, ceniza y fragmentos de roca— que descendieron por las laderas. También se detectaron emisiones de lava que recorrieron algunas partes del volcán.

La reciente erupción provocó un aumento en su altura, que ahora alcanza 3.369 metros, consolidándolo como el volcán más alto de Europa. Su extensión cubre 1.190 kilómetros cuadrados, el doble que la del Monte Vesubio, el segundo mayor de Italia.

La devastadora erupción de 1669
Según relató National Geographic, el 8 de marzo de ese año comenzaron las emisiones de gases desde la cima del volcán, lo que inicialmente no generó alarma. Sin embargo, los gases tóxicos provocaron la asfixia de miles de personas. Después de la erupción, un flujo de lava avanzó hacia la ciudad de Catania, liberando cerca de 830 millones de metros cúbicos de magma. Aunque los habitantes intentaron detenerlo construyendo barreras, no lograron frenar su avance, y la lava terminó destruyendo por completo la ciudad. Se estima que más de 20.000 personas murieron carbonizadas, ya que se negaron a abandonar sus hogares a pesar del peligro.
