A syllable-timed language is one in which syllables are pronounced with roughly equal durations and there is little or no association between the timing of syllables and stress. Syllable-timed languages include Spanish, French, and some African and Native American languages. In contrast, stress-timed languages such as English, German, and Russian have a more variable duration of syllables, with greater duration associated with syllables carrying primary or secondary stress.
