Raul Bueno from PUC Rio showed a study on the cycle path network in Rio de Janeiro. The study was focused on different kind of cycle paths, from urban and sub-urban cycle paths to leisure cycle paths. It ranked the different paths in the city according to the relationship to the cities centrality and demographics. With a heat map, it showed the activity in the city and how the cycle paths covered this. The outcome was that the cycle paths that are in place now and will be developed do not cover the busiest parts of the city well, except from the area of Copacabana.

Rodrigo Rinaldi de Mattos introduced the newest developments regarding bamboo bicycles, for which there is also a growing research interest. The main advantages of these bicycles are their light weight and their stability, while they are the same time flexible and don’t suffer from fissures. Using bamboo greatly decreases the environmental impact of bicycle production; 3 m2 of plantation are enough to produce 15 bicycles per year. The parts are very long-lasting. There is now also laminated bamboo available, which allows for a greater variety of forms.

Este ano estou participando pela primeira vez do Velo-City, evento muito significativo no que se refere aos assuntos relacionados a mobilidade ativa em especial ao uso da bicicleta. Ontem apresentei uma pesquisa, que estou realizando com colegas da Puc-Rio, sobre bicicletas de bambu "in-natura" e laminado. Seguem algumas imagens para ajudar na compreensão da questão.
