In 1925, R. M. Bailey served as the royal tailor to the then Governor General, and used his position to agitate for a school to serve children of color in the country, who at the time were only educated up to a 3rd grade level. This lead to the opening of The Bahamas Government High School, (later changed to The Government High School). In 1967, the year of Majority Rule, his grandson Cleophas R. E. Adderley entered the school, and life for him would never be the same as his journey to becoming one of the greatest national musical composer was taken to another level.
Interviews filmed at Hillside House; Baillou Hill Road North
Cleophas R. E. Adderley was born with the gift of music. A child prodigy, he was able to sing in tune as a toddler and later on, he would begin to play music by ear, often saying that he could hear music in his head. Through the training of his mom, his aunts, and the Cathedral Boys' Choir, Cleophas began a promising musical journey. In 1967 when he entered high school, he encountered another child musical prodigy, in the form of his GHS music teacher Mrs. Marion St. George. Under her direction, he would fluorish as a choir director, arranger and composer, as he was finally able to bring the music in his head to life.
