This drastic reduction in visibility also takes place when you can encounter smog.

Your best defense when you encounter any such is to either stop before you enter the smog or thick smoke or drastically reduce your speed as you approach and then proceed slowly through that thick cloud.

This way you are sure you will not crash, but some lunatic from behind may plough into you if they do not respond to this hazard by slowing down.
