I am a lover of the African continent. Our culture and history connect us, and they can play a powerful role in promoting unity and peace among our people.
Young people also have an important role to play in preserving this heritage. Their creativity and innovative skills can help protect and promote our culture in new ways. I saw this firsthand as when I was a delegate at the UNESCO International Youth Forum in China, where young innovators were using digital tools to preserve cultural heritage and make it accessible to future generations.
Africa has the same potential. By empowering young people to contribute their skills and ideas, we can protect our cultural identity while strengthening peace and unity across the continent.

I shared why economic empowerment is central to peacebuilding.
When young people are economically empowered, they are more secure, more confident, and more at peace with themselves. And when individuals are at peace within, they are better positioned to contribute positively to their communities, their nation, and ultimately the world.
As Global Peace Chain Botswana, we are intentional about moving from conversations to implementation. We will be rolling out practical projects focused on empowering young people and strengthening their role in advancing peace.
Stay tuned for what’s ahead.

Ending Child Marriage in Botswana and the Region
Child marriage robs Girls in Botswana and across Southern Africa of education, health, and the chance to shape their own futures. Too many girls in our communities are pushed into early unions by poverty, harmful traditions, and gaps in protection, trapped in cycles of school dropout, early pregnancy, and limited economic opportunity. As we begin this New Year, we must name the problem clearly: child marriage is a human rights violation and a development setback for Families and Nations.
Speak up in your community, at school meetings, and with local Leaders. Demand stronger enforcement of laws that set 18 as the minimum age for marriage and close loopholes that allow exceptions. Insist on comprehensive sexuality education, accessible adolescent health services, and safe spaces where Girls can report abuse without stigma. Support programs that keep Girls in school, train Teachers to spot and respond to risks, and engage Men, Boys, and Traditional Leaders to shift norms that condone early marriage.
Share survivors’ stories with care and amplify local organisations working on prevention and protection. Hold policymakers accountable: ask for data, transparent reporting, and funded action plans that prioritise Girls. Ending child marriage in Botswana and the region is possible, but only if we act together, loudly and consistently.
