BITRI HOSTS SEQUENCING AND BIOINFORMATICS TRAINING TO STRENGTHEN BOTSWANA’S GENOMIC SURVEILLANCE CAPACITY
BITRI is hosting a Sequencing and Bioinformatics training workshop aimed at strengthening Botswana’s capacity in pathogen genomics and genomic surveillance for Ministry of Health laboratory services. Participants in the training principally comprise of the Ministry of Health’s public health laboratory personnel from various facilities across the country. The training programme encompasses bioinformatics training with hands-on sequencing workflows to equip participants with practical skills for infectious disease research and outbreak response.

Participants are also introduced to high-performance computing (HPC) environments for large-scale genomic data processing and to workflow management systems such as Nextflow, which enable the development of reproducible, scalable, and automated bioinformatics pipelines. These skills allow medical scientists to efficiently manage and analyze large sequencing datasets while ensuring standardization and reproducibility of analyses. Overall, the training supports the integration of Next Generation Sequencing into routine diagnostics while strengthening Botswana’s preparedness to monitor and respond to pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases affecting the country.
