Dear ATI

Man this cuts deep.

I battled with penning this down. It’s the surreality and finality of the situation. The reality is hard to bear.

For many of us, being asked “how are you?” is a tough question to answer. Still is. The difficult part is being honest about it. This question this past week was responded to with tears and a great heaviness. Death is inevitable, but we are never ever prepared to say farewell. The “it gets better with time” statement seems like a fallacy. But only God knows.

I had high hopes for you. Life has taken an alternative route. A bitter truth to accept.
It’s true that grief has 7 stages. I was stuck at denial for a very long time. Where I am right now, between the same denial and bargaining. Regardless and hopefully the acceptance will follow soon.

I want to say to you what I maintained saying to you everytime we would meet. I am proud of you. I am happy to have witnessed you doing what you loved, and seeing you keeping true to yourself. Your brutal honesty about what you faced and that you weren’t giving up was something I admired.

I was always convinced that you placed people before yourself. I mean it’s all in your famous saying, “It’s not about you. it’s not about me. It’s about the people.” Mafoko a gago kgaitsadiaka a ne a re apesa lorato, kgomotso le Tsholofelo. You are the epitome of music being a calling.

My fondest memory of you is when I asked to pray for you and your team when departing for Moz. You said, “Hei,…” took off your head gear held hands and bowed your head. The same God we asked for your protection that day, is the same one I ask that He comforts us.

Over the years I have kept mum about the losses that have happened in my life. I chose to grieve silently. I chose to bear the burden alone. But I, like the world would like to voice out how you have impacted myself and them, doing it so sentimentally by offering your spirit through music. Your presence this side of the world will be missed greatly ATI. Our hearts are bleeding. May God console your family, your friends and your supporters. I pray God has granted you the peace you so desperately sought.
