Got back home about 4 AM this morning, kind of wore out. I thought the mighty Peacock Bass was the king of freshwater, but I found his equal in the river snook in Belize. Awesome fish and mostly in open water. All the locals said the snook was the best eating fish down there. I had never eat it before so our Capt let us bring in one about 10 lbs and our camp cooked it on the grill with her seasonings. Nick, I thought I had died and gone to fisherman's heaven. I have never tasted any fish to compare to it.

Our local guide grew up there and has fished all the surrounding waters for over 35 years. He was one of the best pure fisherman I have ever fished with. If you wanted snook, he put you on snook, if you wanted tarpon, permit bonefish, cubera snapper, he know where they were. He knew every inch of water there and there was a lot of water.

We used 1 ounce jigs tipped with a light green jig tail, in the middle of the river bouncing them off the bottom while drifting with the tide. You only felt a light tap, and then had to learn when to set the hook. When you hooked up, the fight was on and I mean a fight, Drag screaming and you just hold on. They do come up and then another gut renching run. Biggest we caught was around 17 lbs and mostly 8-10 lb fish, but our Capt has the record on the Manatee River at 33 lbs. I had a couple on that I actually could not do anything with and they broke off, The hook just pulled out. Our line was 65 lb Power Pro and It did not break once. I will definitely be going back again probably next year about the same time. Our Capt said Feb was one of the best to fish the river for snook.
