🗿 New Maya Discovery in Belize
Archaeologists working near Chan Chich in northwestern Belize have discovered evidence that Maya people continued visiting sacred sites centuries after the decline of the great Maya kingdoms.
The discovery includes a Late Postclassic altar and ritual offerings at the sites of Kaxil Uinik and Ayiin Winik, located within Belize’s Three Rivers Region.
Why is this important?
Many people grow up hearing that Maya cities were simply abandoned after the Classic Period. Discoveries like this tell a different story.
The cities may have lost their kings and political power, but the sacred places remained important. Maya people continued returning to these locations to honor ancestors, make offerings, and maintain connections to their past.
It is another reminder that Maya civilization did not disappear—it adapted and continued.
For those of us who spend time exploring places like Xunantunich, Caracol, Cahal Pech, and Lamanai, discoveries like this help us better understand the deeper story behind Belize’s ancient landscapes.
