Gladden Spit is one of Belize’s most important fish spawning aggregation sites, where several commercially and ecologically important fish species gather to reproduce and sustain future fish populations. Protecting this area is essential for maintaining healthy marine ecosystems, supporting sustainable fisheries, and safeguarding the livelihoods of coastal communities.
A recent incident involving foreign nationals fishing within the Gladden Spit and Silk Cayes Marine Reserve serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting this critical fish spawning aggregation site. The Southern Environmental Association (SEA) remains committed to supporting its conservation through ongoing monitoring, responsible management, and collaboration with key partners.
SEA continues to work closely with the Belize Fisheries Department, the Belize Coast Guard, local stakeholders, and regional partners to strengthen marine resource management and safeguard the ecological processes that sustain healthy fish populations, resilient marine ecosystems, and the livelihoods of coastal communities throughout the Southern Belize Reef Complex.
Through Belize’s Blue Bond Program, and with support from the Belize Fund for a Sustainable Future, investments in frontline conservation personnel, drone technology for the Belize Coast Guard, and long-range surveillance camera systems for SEA are strengthening Belize’s capacity to monitor and protect critical marine habitats and fisheries resources.
Protecting Gladden Spit means protecting our fisheries, our communities, and our shared marine heritage.
Happy World Turtle Day! 🐢
Today, we celebrate these incredible marine species and the important role they play in keeping our ocean ecosystems healthy. Let’s continue protecting sea turtles, their nesting beaches, and the marine habitats they depend on.
