Ultimutt Pet Rescue

I know the crisis is global but after my experience in Ontario, seeing the current situation in Nova Scotia is heartbreaking.
There is no accessible vet care for many people, especially those living north of Windsor, and homelessness for people is at an all time high. With the grocery prices, it’s known that most people over the age of 40 in the province have health related problems due to lack of proper nutrition. This is astounding! There are a few active rescues in the area that help with local dogs somewhat, but majority import from out of country (even illegally from banned countries) to get that adoption fee or donation, that often exceeds the cost of getting the dog here. Hearing rescues say “let the money flow” when they post for donations is utterly disgusting.

For example, if they come the states or Mexico, their vetting is complete for around $150 including vaccines and spay neuter, then they adopt them out in Canada for $650. I often wonder when people will notice this. The same people who are first to point fingers and try to wipe out any small rescue that poses a “threat”. I often refer to them as “moms with vans” as they don’t often have any education or set up to be taking in strays, out of country, and non vetted animals.
I understand people want to help and that’s great, but bringing more dogs into areas that are then at risk of rehoming like all of these dogs in this post are not helping.
Rescues should work together, but it’s a whole rescues better world. Vet med should be supportive of animal welfare but corporations have taken over. My heart aches and I’m mentally exhausted.
⁉️ canine rabies can be dormant for 12 months, regardless of vaccination status? WE DONT HAVE CANINE RABIES IN CANADA (and we don’t want it)
⁉️ heartworm disease is becoming more prevalent in Canada when before it was considered rare, we use prevention. The protocol should be blood test- put on prevention - retest in 4-6 months, the first negative doesn’t mean they weren’t exposed and won’t develop microfiloaria in the next 6 months; this is spread via mosquitos so will spread to the neighbood and the adoptive families have no idea.

⭐️2024 recap of all the lives we were able to change for the better ⭐️ this is the year I had to stop intakes because of military relocation, this has been a huge change for us but the lives saved were so worth it! Missing everyone!

Going through my lists of all of their names I was able to create collages for each year. My phone has over 40,000 photos and over 9000 videos, yes I have a 1 TB additional stick and paid for cloud space 😜

If I kept my first it wouldn’t have led me to the next! Fostering and intaking what I knew I could help saved roughly 400 dogs and gave them a second chance in life & found their forever families.
I hope to be able to relocate one day to do this again 😭
Although I was exhausted, mentally and physically drained; I have never been happier than I was taking care of dogs. Especially the full litters with their momma. 😍
How did I do it? I didn’t have volunteers other than my boyfriend and mom who could help me with cleaning & laundry, dog walks and to set up pens or pick up food for me. We had no consistent donations or fosters, this led me to independently rescue and make my set up the best I could. Sometimes this got crowded and tricky, but we always made it work and kept everyone clean, fed and happy.

The truth is, I sold my house and moved home into my moms basement, I was lucky to find an amazing vet to work with who I trust with my own pets wholeheartedly. It wasn’t easy or consistent getting this many animals the care they needed, but we did it with MANY obstacles along the way.

I am thankful for my veterinary technician training and years in clinic that prepared me for these endeavours and allowed me to care for the number of dogs and understand their needs fully.

This is a post I have been dreading and putting off, although I’m sure our followers assumed the reality of it. Since moving to rural northern Nova Scotia, I had all the intentions to be able to help locally. Unfortunately after some research, I don’t have the out of pocket funds to front medical costs to be able to intake.

Vet care is far and in between, availability is limited and I no longer have the ample resources at hand working in the veterinary field.
Using my skills to do more, the last 3 years have been life changing for us and so many families. Through so many late nights, tears (on my part) and lives saved, I am so thankful to have been apart of so many journeys. Having the chance to foster and care for so many dogs was so heartwarming experiencing their love and seeing them thrive ❤️
I couldn’t have done it without the help from family and adopters ! Looking back at all of my photos of them in my care, we have memories with each and every one 🥰 I can’t even count the number that slept in our bed with us 😅

I hope to help local rescues promote their adoptable dogs and take on medical fosters in the future.
