A recent incident in Barrie involving the distribution of
๐˜€๐—ฎ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐˜€๐—ป๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—น๐˜€ in a high school has sparked an important conversation.

I am grateful that concerns were raised and that the distribution was STOPPED.

Here is the thing, the fact that it happened AT ALL should stop us in our tracks.

We need to ask ourselves what kind of message we are sending our young people????

Our youth are facing record levels of anxiety, depression, loneliness, addiction, and mental health challenges.

And yet somehow, ๐˜„๐—ฒ'๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ฎ ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜ ๐˜„๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜ ๐˜€๐—ฎ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฒ ๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ณ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ถ๐—ฟ ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐˜† ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ ๐˜€๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—น๐˜€.

As an addiction counsellor, that crosses a line for me.๐Ÿคฌ

The youth I work with don't need better instructions for drug use.

๐Ÿ‘‰๐“๐ก๐ž๐ฒ ๐ง๐ž๐ž๐ ๐›๐ž๐ญ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ ๐ญ๐จ๐จ๐ฅ๐ฌ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐ฅ๐ข๐Ÿ๐ž.

What if every high school student ๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐˜‚๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐˜„๐—ถ๐˜๐—ต ๐—ฎ ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป in human understanding, personal development, emotional regulation, communication skills, healthy relationships, and resilience?

I would argue that would do FAR MORE to prevent addiction than any safer-use resource ever could.

That is the conversation we should be having.

Our youth deserve better. ๐Ÿซถ

A meaningful step in the right direction.

For years, we've watched ๐™ง๐™ž๐™จ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™ง๐™–๐™ฉ๐™š๐™จ ๐™ค๐™› ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™ญ๐™ž๐™š๐™ฉ๐™ฎ, ๐™ž๐™ข๐™ฅ๐™ช๐™ก๐™จ๐™ž๐™ซ๐™ž๐™ฉ๐™ฎ, ๐™–๐™ฉ๐™ฉ๐™š๐™ฃ๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ค๐™ฃ ๐™จ๐™ฉ๐™ง๐™ช๐™œ๐™œ๐™ก๐™š๐™จ, ๐™จ๐™ก๐™š๐™š๐™ฅ ๐™™๐™ž๐™จ๐™ง๐™ช๐™ฅ๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ค๐™ฃ, ๐™˜๐™ฎ๐™—๐™š๐™ง๐™—๐™ช๐™ก๐™ก๐™ฎ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ, ๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™ก๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™š ๐™š๐™ญ๐™ฅ๐™ก๐™ค๐™ž๐™ฉ๐™–๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ค๐™ฃ, ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™™ ๐™–๐™™๐™™๐™ž๐™˜๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ค๐™ฃ ๐™˜๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™˜๐™š๐™ง๐™ฃ๐™จ among young people.

Yet somehow, questioning unrestricted social media access for children became the controversial position.

Kids are ๐—ก๐—ข๐—ง the problem.

The problem is expecting developing brains to ๐—–๐—ข๐— ๐—ฃ๐—˜๐—ง๐—˜ with platforms designed to capture attention, trigger dopamine, and keep users coming back for more.

Will an age restriction solve everything? NO.

Will some young people find ways around it? ABSOLUTELY.

That doesn't diminish the importance of Canada taking action. It simply reminds us that this is a ๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐ซ๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ฉ๐จ๐ข๐ง๐ญ- not a finish line.

I applaud those willing to take this first step.

It's been wonderful to see so many new faces here over the past month.

For those who have been following me for some time, you may have noticed I've been a little quieter on social media lately.

Sometimes life hits, and you need to find the right balance between ๐™๐™š๐™–๐™ก๐™ฉ๐™, ๐™ฌ๐™ค๐™ง๐™ , ๐™›๐™–๐™ข๐™ž๐™ก๐™ฎ, ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™™ ๐™–๐™ก๐™ก ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š ๐™ค๐™ฉ๐™๐™š๐™ง ๐™ง๐™š๐™จ๐™ฅ๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™จ๐™ž๐™—๐™ž๐™ก๐™ž๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™š๐™จ that come with everyday life.

I felt it was important to ๐™ฅ๐™ง๐™–๐™˜๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™จ๐™š ๐™ฌ๐™๐™–๐™ฉ ๐™„ ๐™ฉ๐™š๐™–๐™˜๐™ about creating space, setting priorities, and looking after my wellbeing, so I took a step back for a little while.
