A recent incident in Barrie involving the distribution of
๐๐ฎ๐ณ๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐๐ป๐ผ๐ฟ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐บ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฎ๐น๐ in a high school has sparked an important conversation.
I am grateful that concerns were raised and that the distribution was STOPPED.
Here is the thing, the fact that it happened AT ALL should stop us in our tracks.
We need to ask ourselves what kind of message we are sending our young people????
Our youth are facing record levels of anxiety, depression, loneliness, addiction, and mental health challenges.
And yet somehow, ๐๐ฒ'๐๐ฒ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ฎ ๐ฝ๐ผ๐ถ๐ป๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ป๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐ ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ผ๐๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ณ๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ถ๐ป๐ฒ ๐๐๐ฒ ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐ณ๐ถ๐ป๐ฑ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ถ๐ฟ ๐๐ฎ๐ ๐ถ๐ป๐๐ผ ๐ผ๐๐ฟ ๐๐ฐ๐ต๐ผ๐ผ๐น๐.
As an addiction counsellor, that crosses a line for me.๐คฌ
If we have resources to invest, let's invest them in ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ฎ๐น ๐ต๐ฒ๐ฎ๐น๐๐ต ๐๐๐ฝ๐ฝ๐ผ๐ฟ๐, ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐ถ๐น๐ถ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ, ๐ฒ๐บ๐ผ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐ฎ๐น ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ด๐๐น๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป, ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ป๐ณ๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ, ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ถ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป-๐บ๐ฎ๐ธ๐ถ๐ป๐ด, ๐ต๐ฒ๐ฎ๐น๐๐ต๐ ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ฝ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐๐ธ๐ถ๐น๐น๐, ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐น๐ถ๐ณ๐ฒ ๐๐ธ๐ถ๐น๐น๐ ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐๐ฐ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป.
The youth I work with don't need better instructions for drug use.
๐๐๐ก๐๐ฒ ๐ง๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ญ๐ญ๐๐ซ ๐ญ๐จ๐จ๐ฅ๐ฌ ๐๐จ๐ซ ๐ฅ๐ข๐๐.
What if every high school student ๐ด๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐๐ถ๐๐ต ๐ฎ ๐ณ๐ผ๐๐ป๐ฑ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป in human understanding, personal development, emotional regulation, communication skills, healthy relationships, and resilience?
I would argue that would do FAR MORE to prevent addiction than any safer-use resource ever could.
That is the conversation we should be having.
Our youth deserve better. ๐ซถ

A meaningful step in the right direction.
For years, we've watched ๐ง๐๐จ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐ง๐๐ฉ๐๐จ ๐ค๐ ๐๐ฃ๐ญ๐๐๐ฉ๐ฎ, ๐๐ข๐ฅ๐ช๐ก๐จ๐๐ซ๐๐ฉ๐ฎ, ๐๐ฉ๐ฉ๐๐ฃ๐ฉ๐๐ค๐ฃ ๐จ๐ฉ๐ง๐ช๐๐๐ก๐๐จ, ๐จ๐ก๐๐๐ฅ ๐๐๐จ๐ง๐ช๐ฅ๐ฉ๐๐ค๐ฃ, ๐๐ฎ๐๐๐ง๐๐ช๐ก๐ก๐ฎ๐๐ฃ๐, ๐ค๐ฃ๐ก๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐ญ๐ฅ๐ก๐ค๐๐ฉ๐๐ฉ๐๐ค๐ฃ, ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ฉ๐๐ค๐ฃ ๐๐ค๐ฃ๐๐๐ง๐ฃ๐จ among young people.
Yet somehow, questioning unrestricted social media access for children became the controversial position.
Kids are ๐ก๐ข๐ง the problem.
The problem is expecting developing brains to ๐๐ข๐ ๐ฃ๐๐ง๐ with platforms designed to capture attention, trigger dopamine, and keep users coming back for more.
Will an age restriction solve everything? NO.
Will some young people find ways around it? ABSOLUTELY.
That doesn't diminish the importance of Canada taking action. It simply reminds us that this is a ๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ซ๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฉ๐จ๐ข๐ง๐ญ- not a finish line.
I applaud those willing to take this first step.

Let's continue asking what ๐ ๐ข๐ฅ๐ can be done to better protect developing brains in a digital world.

It's been wonderful to see so many new faces here over the past month.
For those who have been following me for some time, you may have noticed I've been a little quieter on social media lately.
Sometimes life hits, and you need to find the right balance between ๐๐๐๐ก๐ฉ๐, ๐ฌ๐ค๐ง๐ , ๐๐๐ข๐๐ก๐ฎ, ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐ก๐ก ๐ฉ๐๐ ๐ค๐ฉ๐๐๐ง ๐ง๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ค๐ฃ๐จ๐๐๐๐ก๐๐ฉ๐๐๐จ that come with everyday life.
I felt it was important to ๐ฅ๐ง๐๐๐ฉ๐๐จ๐ ๐ฌ๐๐๐ฉ ๐ ๐ฉ๐๐๐๐ about creating space, setting priorities, and looking after my wellbeing, so I took a step back for a little while.
