We pulled this axle shaft apart and found a finger full of “glitter paste”. That thick, metallic sludge is actually the remnants of a wheel bearing that completely pulverized itself inside the housing.
When a bearing goes dry or fails, the metal-on-metal friction creates intense heat and shreds the components. If left alone, it can eventually score the axle shaft so badly that the whole shaft has to be replaced—or worse, the wheel can lock up entirely while driving.
We caught this one before it caused a catastrophic failure, prepped the surfaces, pressed in a fresh new bearing, and got this customer safely back on the road.
