My dad arrived in Canada in 1969. He married my mom in 1976, and brought her over as well. My dad calls Canada, “paradise” and refuses to retire in Greece.
I was born here, but I was raised in Greece. I didn’t return until I was 16, hence, I thought I missed learning about Canada’s history because I wasn’t educated here.
When I started teaching 17 years ago, I came across one short paragraph about residential schools. I might have glossed over it. It didn’t mean anything to me. I didn’t understand it.
When I started my masters in 2016, something led me to Indigenous education. It was the era of the TRC calls to action and eliminating the achievement gap for Indigenous children. The more I learned, the more I shared. I immersed myself in stories that I heard from Elders and survivors. I was devastated.
How could we have lived in the same country and have had different experiences? How was it different for me, as a child of immigrant parents, than it was for them, the founding peoples of Canada? I made it my mission to educate others as well.
Teenacers is built around the Indigenous Ways of Knowing and I am honoured to have been given this opportunity and blessing from Indigenous Elders to implement their ways of education.
It’s hard to know where to start with learning the history of Canada. We have an opportunity to honour these stories and embrace a beautiful culture. And, we can do it together.
Some key things to learn about:
➡️The Royal Proclamation
➡️Indian Residential Schools
➡️The Truth and Reconciliation Commission
➡️Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women
