Happy National Donut Day! Our local friends at Hoopla Donuts are donating $1 from every donut they sell today (Friday, June 2nd) with the goal of $2,000, will be donated to assist the Canadian Cancer Society with their vital research, advocacy, and support for Canadians and their families.

The history of donut day goes back to the First World War. A doctor by the name of Morgan Pett brought eight dozen donuts to cheer up wounded soldiers in a military base. A soldier who received the donuts, Samuel Geary, decided to start a fundraiser with the Salvation Army so that Dr. Pett could continue to provide donuts to the wounded soldiers. The result was the Salvation Army embracing the fundraiser and creating amenity centres in France for the soldiers to gather and socialize - donuts of course played a role in these centres. Back in the North America, nearly 20 years later, in honour of the Salvation Army’s efforts during the First World War, National Donut Day was created!
