It is more than a beautiful sentiment. Research suggests it matters.
A recent Canadian study by Zhou et al. examined the career paths and professional networks of more than 19,000 senior employees across 772 publicly traded Canadian companies between 2000 and 2022. The researchers found that women often need broader and more influential networks than men to reach comparable board-level positions, even when they have similar qualifications and career experience.
The study also found that professional connections between women can play an important role in advancement. Women who were connected to other female leaders were more likely to move into director-level roles, suggesting that mentorship, sponsorship, and meaningful connection are not just “nice to have.” They are part of how barriers begin to shift.

The Honourable Louise Arbour has been named Canada’s 31st Governor General.
She brings a remarkable legacy of public service, legal leadership, and human rights advocacy to this national role.
She is a:

- Former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights
- Former Chief Prosecutor for the International Criminal Tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda
- Companion of the Order of Canada
The Honourable Arbour’s work has helped advance accountability for sexual violence in international law, supported reforms in women’s corrections, and called for institutional change in response to sexual misconduct in the Canadian Armed Forces.
This moment is a meaningful reminder of what is possible when women’s leadership is recognized at the highest levels of public life.
