Welcome to this video on small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and how it can be linked to a wide range of diseases that we so commonly see today.
SIBO is a condition in which there is an abnormal increase in the number of bacteria in the small intestine, which can lead to various symptoms, including belching, bloating, abdominal pain, constipation, and diarrhea.
However, many people don't realize that SIBO can also have far-reaching effects beyond the digestive system, contributing to developing or exacerbating conditions such as autoimmune disease, neurological disorders, and mental health disorders.
In this video, you will learn about SIBO, some common causes and risk factors leading to SIBO, the best testing device for accurately determining the presence of SIBO, and standard treatment options.
So, whether you have been struggling with SIBO, another health condition, or are a healthcare provider looking to expand your understanding of this complex topic, I hope this video is informative and helpful.

Methane (CH4) present on a SIBO breath test is significantly associated with constipation in both IBS and functional constipation. These results suggest there is merit in using SIBO breath testing for constipation.
People with CH4-predominant SIBO, better described as intestinal methane overgrowth (IMO), usually present with bloating, stomach pain (powerful contractions which paralyze peristalsis), and abdominal distention. However, they are also five times more likely to have constipation than hydrogen (H2)-predominant SIBO.
Moreover, the severity of constipation is directly correlated with the level of methane detected on a SIBO breath test. So, again, this merits using a breath test to get an accurate measure of methane and develop a more precise treatment protocol.
Elevated methane (CH4) levels in the small intestine suggests delayed small bowel and colonic transit. In other words, it has been shown and proven that high levels of CH4 found on a breath test can completely halt the movement of food and waste through the small and large intestines, respectively.
Links to some diseases and conditions by elevated methane levels are as follows:
-higher body max index (BMI). Lower transit time increases calories extracted and stored in the body.
-colon cancer. 80% of patients with colon cancer were shown to have high levels of methanogens (methane producers).
-IBD. Patients with IBD show a higher prevalence of methanogens.
-diverticulosis-often have high levels of methanogens.
-obesity/anorexics/periodontitis all shown to have higher levels of methanogens.
