We know a lot of Calgarians are dealing with costly home and property repairs after the hailstorm on the weekend. If that’s you, please be aware of potential door-to-door and contractor scams that sometimes surface after a major weather event. Please report non-criminal business and consumer matters to Consumer Protection Alberta. In the case of fraudulent or criminal activity, please contact us. If you find yourself answering a knock at the door, the Calgary Police Service encourages citizens to keep in mind:
• If you don’t feel comfortable, don’t open your door and don’t be afraid to ask door-to-door sales people or workers to leave.
• Always ask for identification and take note of their name and their company’s name. Before signing anything, do your research and make sure it is legitimate company. Also make sure the company name on the salespersons credentials and the promotional materials match any contracts you are given.
• Most companies that sell products door-to-door must be licensed under the Fair Trading Act and Direct Selling Business Licensing Regulation - https://open.alberta.ca/dataset/ecbe21e1-de85-46b5-9730-6b6c2b9f05c4/resource/51cacccb-7de1-4921-9db8-4e4a8db99fb4/download/dealing-with-door-to-door-sales.pdf
• Never give cash (or any other form of payment) up front to a salesperson or rely on a verbal promise from them. In Alberta, only contractors with a prepaid contracting licence can ask for money before a service is delivered.
• Never share your personal information.
• Don’t buy on impulse. If you are interested, say you will look over the materials they provide to you and get back to them.
• Always shop around and never rely on one salesperson’s opinion for home repair.
• Make sure you understand the terms of the contract if one is provided, including how the contract is renewed, if there are cancellations fees and how you can get out of the contract.
• Report any suspicious people or incidents to police by calling 403-266-1234 or 9-1-1 for a crime in progress.
Red Flags
• Being pressured to sign up on the spot – this is a limited time offer, it’s only available today, the price will be going up tomorrow
• No identification or promotional materials from a legitimate company
• Not acting professionally
• Doesn’t want you to do further research or shop around
• Threatening to disconnect electricity, water or other services without payment.
