I was at a concert tonight. Like many at the concert, my phone was tuned to the inning by inning angst of game 7 of the Blue Jays/Dodgers World Series. Yet, all night, my mind was tuned to the passing of my friend, Neil MacGonigill ... a man who loved music and people. He gave so much for what he loved so much. His stories of the music and the musicians he knew were so rich and full of life experience. Neil could find the heart of a song like no one else - he didn't need to be directed - he just knew. For those who understood his quiet genius, they are rewarded. Neil would sit in a quiet corner as he listened intently to a singer. He would video and catalogue a classic performance on his phone for his records. He would build iconic set lists of songs and intently listen to them on the mower at the golf course. He kept learning - from the great artists of the past and the new artists about to make their way. He was a guiding beacon of light for those who were fortunate to know. He would say to me, "Don't tell me the score of the game, I want to listen when I get home." He's home now.
