ESTATE PLANNING: The Talk Nobody Wants to Have
Your kids: "Mom, we need to talk about your estate plan."
You: "I'm FINE. I'm not dying anytime soon!"
Your kids: "We know! But also... do you know where your photos are?"
You: "..."
You: "Define 'where.'"
Let's be honest.
Nobody WANTS to have the estate planning conversation.
It feels morbid. Uncomfortable. Like admitting you're not going to live forever (spoiler: none of us are).
But here's the thing:
The estate planning conversation is actually a LOVE conversation.
It's saying:
β§ "I don't want you to struggle when I'm gone"
β§ "I don't want you fighting with your siblings"
β§ "I want to make this as easy as possible for you"
And photos? Photos are the EASY part of that conversation.
Because talking about photos doesn't feel like talking about death.
It feels like talking about LIFE.
"Remember this vacation?"
"Oh my gosh, look at your hair in 1987!"
"I forgot we even took this photo!"
So if you're avoiding the estate planning talk because it's too heavy?
Start with the photos.
Get them organized. Create photobooks. Make copies for everyone.
Then, once you're flipping through memories together, the conversation naturally shifts to:
"You know, we should probably make sure you can access all of these after I'm gone."
And just like that, you've started the estate planning conversation without it feeling like a funeral.
Photos are the gateway to the conversations.
Because they remind us what we're actually protecting: Love. Connection. Family.

P.S. - Your kids DO want to have this conversation. They're just scared to bring it up. Make it easy for them.
