The next member of our Snapshot Series is Cleisthenes. Cleisthenes was an Athenian statesman who is credited with the creation of a system of democracy. This system eventually enabled all citizens to be able to actively and directly participate in government.

Cleisthenes served as chief archon of Athens and allied himself with the Assembly, and against the nobles. In doing so, he was able to impose a democratic reform. He based individual political responsibility of a place rather than of being a part of a specific clan.

As chief archon of Athens, Cleisthenes was able to see how tyranny impacted society. He saw that it improved the economic condition of the “common people” and had temporarily broken the political power of the noble houses. He believed that the reforms would not be realized, however, until the principle of hereditary privilege was dealt with at the roots. To solve this, he proposed that political organizations move away from clans and kinship groups, but instead more towards locality. He believed that public rights and duties should depend on the township, and that they kept a register of citizens and elected officials. Citizens would therefore be known by their township instead of by his father’s last name.

Cleisthenes contributed greatly to the idea of isonomia. Isonomia is a principle of equality rights for all. The reforms led by Cleisthenes largely related to the principle of isonomia, which led to a wider and more active participation of all citizens in public life.
