Today is World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. It is estimated that 40 million people are caught in this injustice here in Canada and around the globe. Human trafficking is one of the fastest growing crimes in the world and has three distinct elements: 1. The Act: Recruiting, transporting, receiving or harbouring a person. 2. The Means: By threat, coercion, deception, or abuse of power to gain control over another human being. 3. The Purpose: To exploit for s*x or forced labour. Trafficking differs from human smuggling, and contrary to what you may believe, victims do not need to be moved from one location to another to be “trafficked.” Listen to Anu George, Executive Director @ijmcanada, one of the leading organizations in this work, as she shares the 5 step process of addressing human trafficking.
