Why don't we use the same enzyme for every feed?

Because every feed ingredient is different.

The fiber found in corn, soybean meal, wheat, or by-products all have unique structures. On top of that, those ingredients can vary depending on where they're grown. That's why we have our Enzyme Development Platform (EDP5). It helps analyze feed ingredients, identify the fibers that are hardest for animals to digest, and match them with the right enzyme solution.

Instead of taking a one-size-fits-all approach, we tailor our technology to the feed itself, helping you unlock more nutrients and support better health for all your livestock.

Our team had the opportunity to attend two outstanding industry events:

πŸ“ Poultry Science Association (PSA) Annual Meeting – We were proud to share our research with the University of Manitoba evaluating multi-carbohydrase technology in broilers and laying hens while learning from the latest scientific advancements and reconnecting with colleagues and collaborators from across the industry.

πŸ“ World's Poultry Congress (WPC) – We enjoyed engaging discussions on Glyco-bolitesβ„’ technology and bird health, exploring new ideas, and catching up with industry partners from around the world.

Thank you to everyone who we got to collaborate with, and continue to advance poultry nutrition through research and knowledge.

Non-starch polysaccharides (NSPs) are naturally found in many feed ingredients. While πŸ– and πŸ“ can't digest them on their own, that doesn't mean they should be removed from the diet.

The goal isn't to eliminate fiber, it's to make it work better.

That's where multi-carbohydrase enzymes come in. They help break down complex plant fibers to:
Unlock trapped nutrients
Reduce anti-nutritional effects
Support beneficial gut microbes with prebiotic compounds

The result? Better nutrient utilization and a healthier gut without sacrificing valuable fiber ingredients.

Over the next few weeks, we'll be exploring multi-carbohydrases and multi-proteases, starting with a simple question: Why does knowing your feed substrates matter so much when choosing an enzyme?

What happens when a silage pile goes wrong? More importantly… what does it cost your herd? πŸ“‰πŸ₯›

Last week we talked about making great silage. This week, we're looking at what happens inside the pile when fermentation doesn't go as planned. Poor fermentation doesn't just create ugly silage, it can cost you performance.

Here's what happens when the wrong microbes take over πŸ‘‡

Energy loss – Yeasts, molds, and Clostridia burn through valuable sugars, leaving behind lower-energy feed.
Protein breakdown – Quality protein is converted into ammonia and other compounds that can reduce feed intake and waste valuable nutrients.
Locked-up fiber – Excess heating can trigger the Maillard reaction, making fiber much harder for rumen microbes to digest.

So how do you stay ahead?

At harvest: Use a quality inoculant to promote a fast, efficient fermentation, preserve nutrients, and improve aerobic stability at feedout.
At the mixer: If you're feeding lower-quality forage, exogenous enzymes can help break down plant fiber and improve digestibility, unlocking more energy from every bite.
Inoculants can help protect your forage investment. Enzymes can help you get more value out of the feed that's in the bunk. πŸ„ πŸ‚

High-quality dairy silage doesn't happen by accident, it’s won or lost in the details from harvest to feedout. πŸŒΎπŸ„
Whether you are packing corn silage in the U.S. Midwest or cutting barley, alfalfa, or corn in Canada, maximizing milk-from-forage requires consistent ex*****on at every stage.

Here are the 4 non-negotiable Best Management Practices (BMPs) for the season:
1. Target the Moisture, Not the Calendar
Corn Silage: Don't just trust the kernel milkline. Target 32–35% Dry Matter (65–68% moisture) for bunkers and piles to secure peak starch and fiber digestibility.
Haylage/Small Grains: Target 35–40% DM. If the crop gets too dry, it won't pack; if it's too wet, you risk clostridial fermentation and heavy leachate losses.
2. Defeat Oxygen with Weight
The 1:800 Rule: Ensure your packing equipment weight equals at least 800 lbs per ton of silage delivered per hour (e.g., 100 tons/hr = 80,000 lbs of tractor weight).
Pack in thin, 4-to-6 inch layers. Tractor tires are built for flotation, not compressionβ€”thin layers are the only way to squeeze out air pockets.
Seal immediately with a high-quality oxygen-barrier film and two layers of plastic.
3. Process the Starch
For corn silage, monitor your kernel processor closely. You want greater than 70% processing score (no whole or half kernels in the cup). Unprocessed starch passes right through the cow and into the manure pit.
4. Manage the Face at Feedout
Keep the face tight and clean. Shave, don't scoop from the bottom, to prevent undercutting and oxygen pe*******on.
Feedout rate: Remove at least 6 inches per day in the winter and 12 inches in the summer to prevent heating, yeast growth, and TMR refusal.
Quality forage is the cheapest way to maintain butterfat and milk yield while driving down supplemental grain costs.πŸŒ½πŸ’°
