The perfect beach read!

Ok maybe I’m a little bit weird (don’t worry, I have lighter reads packed too) but this story is GUTTING. The interwoven narrative between past and present works incredibly well and the characterization of the Edward and Isabel is immaculate. I really liked Girl A but this was a whole new level of brilliance!

That was a wild ride!

This book had so many things going on, from the multiple social commentaries, to the gripping plot, to the fully fleshed-out characters. What I found so well done was that it comes at so many issues—the influencer lifestyle, consent of minors for content, the manosphere, organized religion, feminism, armchair activism, co-dependency—from so many angles, that I was constantly changing my opinion about what I thought of the characters and what they were doing. As an author, I’m a little jealous that I didn’t write this because I’ve had story ideas about all of these issues, but I never thought to pull them all off simultaneously. What a feat. I read the ARC but had to order a physical copy because my ‘favourites’ book shelf won’t be complete without it.

About the book:

Perfect for fans of Lucy Foley and Will Dean, No Higher Ground is a high-stakes, race-against-time thriller of one family trapped during a flood of epic proportions.

In the midst of a terrifying, once-in-a-lifetime flood, Raven, her two children, and their Chihuahua are trapped on the rooftop of her childhood home along with her stepmother, Joan. Surrounded by a raging torrent, Raven fights to stay calm as her thoughts turn to her sister, Ivy, who died tragically when they were children in the now-flooded basement below her.

As the water rises at an alarming rate, rescue becomes dangerous and nearly impossible. And with her daughter’s asthma worsening, her newly defiant teenager challenging her, and concerning behavior from Joan, Raven’s control slips, and tensions between the family reach boiling point. When shocking memories from her childhood unexpectedly return, fracturing the past, it becomes evident that no one on the rooftop will be the same after the storm.

If they make it out alive...

Set over six relentlessly tense hours, No Higher Ground is a powerful exploration of grief, guilt, and trauma—and a chilling reminder of our helplessness in the face of mother nature’s mercilessness.

A fact about No Higher Ground—I used a real life 100-year flood (in 2013) near me as the setting for this story!
