The McGirr Lab
The McGirr Lab is a research lab at the University of Calgary, and a proud member of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute and Mathison Centre for Mental Health Research and Education. Under the direction of Dr. Alexander McGirr, we conduct several different kinds of studies in both our preclinical and clinical labs to understand the neurobiology behind mood disorders and improve treatment outcomes.
Using a range of techniques such as genetic m0dification, optogenetics, and behavioral and pharmacological studies, our preclinical lab studies cellular and network level changes in the brain to investigate the neuroscience behind mood disorders.
Illnesses such as Major Depression and Bipolar Disorder are a leading cause of disability worldwide, and current treatment options do not work for everybody. Our clinical lab focuses on using non-invasive neurostimulation techniques to better understand mental health and investigate treatment options. Through this research, we are working on novel treatments and strategies to improve the lives of individuals with Depressive and Bipolar Disorders.
From the cellular level in our neuroscience lab to our clinical treatment trials, we are dedicated to mental health research at every step of the way!
