2011 INFINITI QX56 Premium

The Infiniti QX56's interior is just what you’d expect from a luxury SUV, with leather seats, a 10-way adjustable driver’s seat, tri-zone automatic climate control and hard drive-based navigation system as standard. Infiniti’s Around View Monitor and 13-speaker Bose audio system with in-dash CD/DVD player and MP3 playback capability are also standard. Options include semi-aniline leather seating and a DVD system with dual seven-inch monitors in the Theater package.

Powering the 2011 QX56 is a 5.6-liter V-8 producing 400 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque. The V-8 is mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission, which transmits power to either the rear or all four wheels with the available Infiniti All-Mode 4WD. The QX56 4WD manages to scoot to 60 mph from a standstill in 6.1 seconds. For a vehicle weighing 5850 lbs, that’s scary fast. In addition to its capable drive train, is its equally capable chassis borrowed from the Nissan Patrol. The chassis rides on an independent front and rear double-wishbone suspension and has an available Hydraulic Body Motion Control system which helps decrease body roll for a more controlled and comfortable ride. The QX56 gets a standard class IV tow hitch, and is rated at 8500 lbs towing capacity.

Refinement is a key word for the interior, too, which is no longer a lowly, plasticky Nissan cabin playing dress-up. This is a true luxury barge now, quiet and stylish inside, with handsome wood (stained with an attractive dark-to-light gradient) trimming the dash and doors, along with stitched leather smeared across the center console, door panels, and center armrest. The gauges are highly legible, and they feature some pretty cool Spirograph-style background graphics. The front seats are very comfortable, and there’s lots of legroom for second-row riders. Acres of glass make everything feel bright and airy.

2012 Mazda3 GS-SKY 4

This Mazda3 is in pristine condition. The interior has stylish heated seats in addition to all power options including a remote starter.

The 2012 Mazda3 GS-SKY's 2.0L engine, producing 155 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque, is responsive yet not at all a gas guzzler, consuming, on average, a low 7.5L/100km.

The newly modified transmission has been slimmed down. As a result, it's a pleasure to drive, but still aggressive. While driving, you can really feel the bite when you change gears, there is no time lost between shifts. These seamless changes make you feel like switching gears is as natural as can be - a feeling that can convert an automatic transmission lover over to the manual transmission side.

SKYACTIV, now 10% lighter, the engine and ignition have also been re-examined. Rather than cut back on the amount of fuel injected by increasing air volume with a turbo, the compression ratio in the engine has been intensified while friction has been reduced. By re-thinking the process by which air and fuel are mixed together, the engine consumption rate has been improved. A now longer 4-2-1 exhaust system keeps exhaust out and maintains the engine at a lower temperature, a bonus for better ignition control.

The redesigned 6-speed automatic transmission is also lighter. In fact, not only has its size been reduced, Mazda has optimized it for a FWD vehicle. Less friction between parts means gains in fuel efficiency. Obviously, much attention was paid to user comfort.

The car body itself has not escaped this slimming down effort either, losing 8% of its weight. According to Mazda, the chassis is also 15% lighter.

Mazda have made great strides to soundproof the car. Ambient noise doesn't bother you, and neither does the din of a heavy rain shower pummeling down on the car. Wide open, the sunroof lets in just a little noise - the soothing sound of a gentle breeze. Your eardrums stay unabused even when we accelerate. All in all, the Mazda3 is nice and quiet.
