During the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, the Scholz Trumpet Quartet was formed by Richard, Mark, Andrew and Paul Scholz who livestream’d a concert series from their home as a way to continue their passion for performance during a time when no groups were actively performing. Playing trumpet quartets had always been a bonding activity in the household but became serious in the early stages of the pandemic when the family started their series of online concerts.

As the world started to open again, the Scholz Trumpet Quartet decided to take their show on the road and can now be seen performing around the province in churches, concert halls and care homes.

They are continually practicing and performing music from all different genres and time periods, and have even performed commissions from Canadian composers. The Scholz Trumpet Quartet can often be seen with around 15 different instruments at a single performance.

In addition to creating music, the ensemble loves to engage with the audience by chatting about their program and the instruments they play.

Richard Scholz (trumpet) boasts a career spanning over 30 years of performing in the Calgary area. Described as a “commanding, dynamic player”, he has been the principal trumpet player for the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra since 2009 and has been performing with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra since 1995.

Andrew Scholz (bass trumpet/trombone) prides himself on versatility among the low-brass family. He has performed with groups such as the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra, PrimeTime Big Band, Symphony of the Kootaneys and Alberta Winds. He is an active low brass clinician and owns Scholz Music Works – a company that repairs string, brass, and woodwind instruments.

Mark Scholz (trumpet) has a passion for music performance and education. He can be seen performing with groups around Calgary including the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Red Deer Symphony Orchestra, Rocky Mountain Symphony Orchestra, Calgary Bach Society, Festival Chorus, Altius Brass and PrimeTime Big Band. Mark also enjoys leading clinics and runs a private studio out of his home where he enjoys teaching and collaborating with his students.

Paul Scholz (trumpet) began his music career at age 5 on the violin but always had a desire to pick up the trumpet. He began playing trumpet with his school band and his love for the trumpet was soon solidified. He is now a trumpet performer in the city of Calgary, having played with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Red Deer Symphony Orchestra, Festival Chorus and Altius Brass, just to name a few.

The CMA's Musician of the Month is Dustyn Richardson!

Dustyn Richardson is a Calgary-based freelance woodwind musician specializing in clarinet, saxophone, flute, and oboe. Equally comfortable performing in Broadway-style productions, symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, big bands, and commercial groups, he maintains an active and diverse career as both a performer and educator.

Dustyn holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Calgary, a Master of Music in Multiple Woodwind Performance from New Jersey City University, and recently completed a Bachelor of Education specializing in Secondary Music. He is currently a teacher with the Calgary Board of Education, bringing his extensive professional performance experience into the classroom to inspire the next generation of musicians.

During more than a decade in the New York City area, Dustyn performed extensively as a freelance musician, subbing on over twenty Broadway productions and holding chairs on shows Prince of Broadway and Disney's Frozen. He also performed extensively with the New York City Ballet Orchestra and was a substitute musician for the Radio City Christmas Spectacular.

Since returning to Calgary, Dustyn has been fortunate enough to perform with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Theatre Calgary (Beaches, Legally Blonde, The Tale of the Gifted Prince and Come From Away), Stage West, and the 9th Avenue Big Band and has recorded with Juno-award winning artist Caity Gyorgy and Mark Limacher.

Do you have an upcoming performance or project you’re excited about?

"The summer is generally a time for me to relax and recharge. But I will use this opportunity to promote the Summer Clarinet Intensive at Mount Royal Conservatory that I am teaching with clarinetists Stan Clime and Laurie Blanchet who I have been fortunate enough to work with at the Calgary Phil."

What do you like about the Calgary Music Community?

"I enjoy how diverse the music scene is here in Calgary. I am always meeting new musicians from scenes that I didn't know exist. Always fun to play and hang with new musicians outside of what you normally play."

What is your favourite genre of music to listen to, and why?

"I try to listen to as many genres of music as possible- that way I never get bored! But I often find myself gravitating to listening to classical and jazz music. Lately I have been listening to a lot of music from the Balkan region. Like many musicians in Calgary, I am often stuck in my car commuting to gigs and teaching and fortunately I think we have great radio stations playing a wide variety of music that always keep things interesting. Shout out to CKUA and CJSW especially!"
