🛡️ SCAM ALERT: The Latest Scams Nowadays and How to Avoid Being a Victim

A few months ago, a friend of mine — let's just call her Violet — called me anxious and stressed. Her bank accounts and credit cards had been hacked.

It started with a notification that her SIM card had been swapped. Before that, a few odd text messages with links, and calls where no one answered. Turns out, scammers are now using AI to clone people's voices — and some banks use voice recognition to verify identity. If a scammer has a copy of your voice, that "security" step can work against you.

AI is incredible, but the same tools helping us are also helping scammers get more convincing. Just last week, a fellow mortgage broker shared that her client got scammed by someone pretending to be from an appraisal company — copied logo, copied format, looked exactly real.

Being scammed is never just about the money. There's shame, stress, and broken trust that comes with it.

Here's how to protect yourself 👇

🔍 Verify the source. Check the domain (after the @ sign) on any email asking for money. When in doubt, call the company directly.

✏️ Watch for inconsistencies. Odd fonts, spelling errors, awkward grammar — these are red flags.

🎙️ Rethink your voicemail greeting. AI voice-cloning is real. Consider using your network's default greeting instead of your own voice.

🪪 Guard your personal info. Never share your full name, date of birth, SIN, or address online.

🛒 Be cautious on Facebook Marketplace. If a stranger asks for a deposit before you've even seen the item, pause.

🧭 Trust your gut. If something feels off, slow down and ask questions before acting.
