The Enduring Connection Between the Loma and Kissi Tribes of West Africa.

The Loma and Kissi are neighboring ethnic groups residing primarily in Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone. Their relationship is distinguished by a rich history of alliances, cultural exchanges, and shared traditions that have shaped both communities over generations.

Historical accounts and oral traditions from both groups highlight a foundational alliance established through marriage. According to legend, a Kissi man gave his daughter, Kumba, in marriage to the Loma people. This union is commemorated in the Kissi reference to the Loma as "Kumba-juku" or "Kumba-jikui," meaning "the children of Kumba." This matrimonial bond has served as a cornerstone for the enduring relationship between the two tribes.

In Loma society, inter-ethnic relationships are often described using alliance idioms, with one group identified as the "wife-giver" (keke) and the other as the "wife-receiver" (daabe). Within this framework, the Kissi are regarded as the keke to the Loma, underscoring the significance of their historical and social ties.

Agriculture is another area where the Loma and Kissi share common ground. Both groups are renowned for their expertise in rice cultivation, with the Kissi recognized as skilled rice farmers and the Loma considered among the best farmers in Liberia. This shared agricultural focus has fostered mutual respect and collaboration.

Trade and cultural exchange have further strengthened the connection between the two communities. The Kissi, for example, are known for their ironworking skills and the production of the "Kissi penny," a form of currency that circulated among various ethnic groups, including the Loma.
