Our response to a challenge from the Architects' Association of Prince Edward Island for local firms to enter Art In The Open | Art à ciel ouvert, Charlottetown, PEI with 'habitable structures made with recycled, repurposed or renewable materials'. Drawing on Prince Edward Island's agricultural heritage, the design incorporates 16,000 linear feet of sisal baler twine, pre-strung on a framework that, when assembled on site within the supporting rebar structure, would create a natural gradient of catenary curves. The resulting shape creates an experience of space from within the form, as well as outside or underneath it. The familiar smell and tactile nature of the twine, and the lightness of the structure invited interaction.
