I would like to sincerely thank Viscount Alexander Public School - UCDSB for the invitation to come speak to students during Education Week. It was great to engage with Mme Dochery's class in both English and French. C'était génial d'engager avec la classe de M. Dochery en les deux langues officiels.

The students were full of curiosity and had lots of great questions and what made this visit special was that my nephew, Timmy, was in the class that I spoke to. The future is bright folks!

Statement on the closing of the Cornwall Salvation Army Food Bank

I am deeply concerned by the recent announcement by the Salvation Army that their food bank in Cornwall is set to close next month. At a time when food bank access is at an all time high across Canada, to lose a food bank locally is devastating to our community.

This news comes on the heels of the City of Cornwall and the United Counties of SDG providing one-time funding to all food banks in our area. We are allocating $79,307 across five food banks in Cornwall and SD&G, amounting to around $15,680 per food bank. We did offer this funding to the Salvation Army food bank in Cornwall but it was refused, citing the pending closure. This refusal is of great concern to me when financial challenges were the reason cited.

I have spoken to a few of the volunteers who are involved at the local Salvation Army church and food bank and have also written to the leadership at the Salvation Army Ontario Divisional Headquarters requesting a meeting about this decision and unanswered questions.

We will continue to work with our partner agencies on a plan forward.
