On September 17, the Bank of Canada reduced its key policy rate by 25 basis points to 2.5%, the lowest level in three years. The decision reflects a weakening labor market—with over 100,000 jobs lost in the past two months—and reduced concerns about inflationary pressures. The economy contracted by 1.6% in Q2, and near-term growth prospects remain soft.

Governor Tiff Macklem noted that U.S. tariffs are creating uncertainty, but emphasized the need to balance risks. The Governing Council voted unanimously for the cut and signaled it is prepared to ease further if conditions deteriorate.

Looking ahead, the Bank will closely monitor exports, business costs, and the broader impact of weaker demand. While economists expect at least one more cut before year-end, markets are not currently pricing in additional easing in 2025. The next rate decision is scheduled for October 29.
