The Bank of Canada increased the policy rate by 25 basis points. The Bank of Canada today increased its target for the overnight rate to 4¾%, with the Bank Rate at 5% and the deposit rate at 4¾%. Additionally, the Bank is keeping up its quantitative tightening strategy. 

Consumer price inflation is declining globally, partly due to lower energy prices than they were a year ago, but underlying inflation is still high. Major central banks are indicating that interest rates may need to climb even more in order to restore price stability, despite the fact that economic growth is slowing down globally due to increasing interest rates.

The central bank predicts that CPI will decrease to approximately 3% during the summer. This is primarily due to the impact of lower energy prices and the fading effect of significant price increases from the previous year. After evaluating the available information, the Governing Council has decided to raise the policy interest rate. This decision is based on the belief that the existing monetary policy measures were not restrictive enough to achieve equilibrium between supply and demand, and to consistently bring inflation back to the target rate of 2%.
